Chickens can be bought from lots of different places, specialist suppliers, agricultural shows and rescue centres.
They are classed as chicks until they are eight weeks old and from 8 – 18 weeks females are known as pullets until they start to lay eggs.
Point of lay happens when they are about 18 weeks old and they lay their first egg. Chickens at this age will produce the most eggs. There are pros and cons having them at these ages but its good to have mature chickens, a year or so old as they make ideal pets after their egg producing drops off.
Ex-battery hens also make great pets when they are no longer wanted by commercial farms because their egg producing has dropped off.
